A voice breaking the silence and breaking through the bars to join the city's rainbow wave. A touching handwritten letter from transgender inmates in the Infirmary Ward (Section 6) of Secondigliano Prison recently arrived at Napoli Pride. They proudly sign themselves "The Sirens of Secondigliano.".
A choral, profound and peaceful message, addressed to the institutions and to the entire community, to claim dignity, rights and true paths to reintegration. “In Italy, politics controls everything, which is why trans women in prison have to get what they want in primitive ways.” it is written in the incipit of the letter. “"So, together, through the power of words, we ask the State for gender equality, equity, and inclusiveness in prisons in the Campania region."”.
The inmates are not asking for discounts, but for a penitentiary system that takes care of them. “the human, social and psychological aspect of the offender”, to ensure fair social redemption and prevent recidivism. Theirs is a demand for visibility and humanity: “"We are the quietest voice, the silent voice that can't be heard. We want to make our voices heard. We are prisoners, but we are here. We're not the only ones serving our sentences!"”. To close the letter, a powerful message of non-violence: “We know that the antidote to all this is PEACE”.
To collect this appeal is Antinoo Arcigay Naples, which has been operating for a long time, together with other associations such as Transgender Association Naples And Vesuvius Pride, within the penitentiary structure to guarantee support and proximity to the inmates through the volunteer desk “Beyond the Wall”.
Ruby Rose, an activist of Antinoo Arcigay Napoli who personally supports the trans prisoners of Secondigliano with the volunteer help desk “Al di la del Muro”, declared: “This letter is a cry of hope and vindication that we cannot, and will not, ignore. Through our 'Beyond the Wall' help desk, we experience firsthand every day the enormous difficulties and double and triple discrimination that trans women and LGBTQIA+ prisoners experience in detention. Prison too often risks becoming a place of oblivion, where identity and dignity are erased. The 'Sirens' define themselves as the silent voice that cannot be heard: Napoli Pride serves precisely this purpose, to act as a megaphone for those who are silenced. We will bring their words to the streets with us, to remind everyone that civil and human rights do not stop at a closed gate and that true rehabilitation comes only through respect, acceptance, and personal care.‘
Napoli Pride welcomes the words of the Sirens of Secondigliano with emotion, committing to carry their message of peace and equality through the streets of the city, so that no voice is left behind.
