From Montelupo to Fucecchio to Castelfiorentino
Florence, June 12, 2026 – Three dates, three opportunities to reflect on stereotypes, identity, rights, and memory through the language of culture and live entertainment. This is the heart of "Le Voci Fuori," the project promoted by eleven municipalities in the Empoli Val d'Elsa area, led by Empoli, and developed in collaboration with Arcigay Firenze Altre Sponde, Sociolab, Scomodo Empoli, and with the support of the Tuscany Region, for next week.
Two theater performances, three dates: June 17th with "The Lottery of Stereotypes" and June 18th and 22nd with two editions of "La Romanina." Through theater and storytelling, Le Voci Fuori aims to offer citizens concrete opportunities for encounter, listening, and awareness, in the belief that culture is a fundamental tool for building more welcoming, inclusive, and prejudice-free communities. As Stefania Fontanelli, Councilor of the Municipality of Montelupo Fiorentino, emphasizes, "As public administrations, I believe it is our duty to promote policies of equality and respect, combat forms of hatred, and pay attention to all minorities, including LGBTQIA+ people. We cannot avoid implementing policies to raise awareness among the population and implementing training programs to improve the quality of life for all citizens," the councilor concluded. "Policies of equality and respect must remain at the center of the debate and of our democratic structure.".
Le voci fuori opens on June 17th with "The Lottery of Stereotypes" in Montelupo Fiorentino and continues with "La Romanina," a show that brings to life the story of Romina Cecconi, one of the first Italian transgender women to publicly affirm her identity. It's an intense story of suffering and rebirth, but also of courage, self-determination, and freedom, which still needs to be told and understood today. "Culture has a universal language," said Sabrina Mazzei, councilor of Fucecchio, which hosts the second event on June 18th, "capable of breaking down discrimination. Bringing this testimony today means actively remembering so that the past doesn't repeat itself. In an era that risks erasing minorities, visibility becomes a fundamental act to prevent the invisibility of lives and to build, together, a space that is truly safe and welcoming for all people." Marta Longaresi, councilor of Castelfiorentino, emphasizes the value of the initiative hosted at the Teatro del Popolo's Ridotto: "It's very important for us to host a theatrical performance that, through masterful artistry, addresses crucial issues such as diversity, gender equality, and human rights. It's a touching story that recounts one of the first people to have the courage to make an important gesture. A story of suffering and rebirth, which even today needs to be told, shared, and understood.".
Veronica Salvadori, councilor of Gambassi Terme, agrees, emphasizing that "culture has a universal language capable of breaking down discrimination. Bearing this testimony today means actively remembering so that the past is not repeated. With Le Voci Fuori, Arcigay Firenze Altre Sponde renews its commitment to promoting, through culture, a more just, open, and respectful society of diversity. Because each of our voices matters, and it's important to use it, even for those who lack the strength, courage, or ability to use it.
