Afragola (NA) – In recent months we have been witnessing a real moral crusade near the parking lot of the Ikea and Leroy Merlin shopping centres in Afragola. Plainclothes local police operations, stakeouts, and reports of "obscene acts in a public place and acts contrary to public decency" are occurring with a frequency that leaves one perplexed.
The language used by the press and social media to describe these operations—including "eye-catching," "seeking intimacy in broad daylight," and "shameless" behavior—seems to have come straight out of a 1960s vice squad report. As expected, moral condemnation is justified by invoking the presence of "families" on weekends or the outrage at the nearby municipal cemetery, to which is added the usual rhetorical and guilt-inducing paraphernalia against prostitution and sex worker. Yet, coincidentally, the places systematically and repressively targeted are once again—and exclusively—those known to be meeting places for men. The same zeal, nor the same deployment of plainclothes officers, is not observed in other equally well-known places where heterosexual couples congregate. It is unacceptable that in 2026 we still witness this type of creeping discrimination, disguised as protection of urban decorum.
