She continues: "Headlines and articles have repeatedly and in detail focused on the clothing the victim was wearing when she was found, transforming irrelevant informational details into morbid details that serve only to titillate the public's voyeurism. When you report a murder and choose to dwell on the victim's clothing, especially if it's related to gender expression or intimacy, you're not providing information: you're constructing a narrative that shifts attention from the violence suffered to the private lives of those who can no longer defend themselves. In the case of Roberto Guerrino, the way some newspapers described his body and clothing contributes to fueling stigma and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people, insinuating that the context in which they lived or expressed themselves is somehow part of the problem. We ask that this process stop here. And we ask those who made mistakes and acknowledge their mistake to try, in some way, to make amends: for this reason, we ask newspaper editors, where possible, to remove those details from articles.
