Bologna, May 12, 2026 – For the first time in Italy, a child has been recognized as the child of three parents: a mother and two fathers. The Court of Appeal of Bari ruled this. The child, born in Germany, is the son of the mother who gave birth to him and the two fathers who have raised him since birth.
“We enthusiastically welcome a ruling that welcomes a new family model and helps us rethink care relationships in our contemporary world”: he declares Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay. “For the first time in Italy,” he continues, “a court recognizes that a child can have three parents who love, raise, and protect them. It is a clear signal to the legislator: families have changed, and the law must keep pace.
