It's certainly not our place to delve into the rules for new members of the municipal family council, but the right-wing's statements deserve our intervention because they imply, not too subtly, that two associations like AGEDO—an association of parents and friends of homosexual people—and Famiglie Arcobaleno—associations of homosexual parents—cannot be members of the aforementioned municipal body.
This is an extremely annoying attitude, given that the Bologna center-right bases its criticisms on regulatory issues rather than on political and social visions of the concept of family, which in their conception is one composed of a man and a woman, married, and with children.
This vision must be overcome because society is made up of a large and diverse variety of families that have the same needs as traditional families, but often do not enjoy the same protections. And we are not just talking about families of homosexual parents, but also the thousands of non-traditional families that politics often neglects.
In short, the right should resign itself and learn that politics is about reforming laws and regulations and about inclusion, not exclusion, because the world has never stopped or gone backwards.
