ROME The TV statements come across as "Di Pietro-esque," joking. But gay people across Italy are having no fun. Antonio Di Pietro began his speech on Porta a Porta by railing against the PD-PDL agreement under the Monti-led government: "It's like a marriage between men." Then yesterday morning on Canale 5, he doubled down. "They'll realize they can't be together because two men in the bedroom don't have children." Gay people have gone wild. Aurelio Mancuso, president of Equality Italia, was the first, followed by Arcy Gay president Paolo Patanè, Fabrizio Marrazzo of the Gay Center, and a long trail of insults online. Even Franco Grillini, founder of Arci Gay and now a member of the IDV, called his leader's words "unfortunate." He eventually apologized, in a detailed statement addressed to the entire LGBT community: "My joke was absolutely unfortunate but involuntary. We reaffirm our full commitment to the fight for civil rights and individual freedoms." These words brought a sigh of relief to Paola Concia, Democratic Party member, the only openly gay woman in Parliament.
