ROME – "The Italian People's Republic of Venice says no to this technical government. We won't vote for it and we'll stay out of it." These words, delivered live on television yesterday by Antonio Di Pietro, were enough to unleash the ire of his loyalists online, who completely disagree with his decision not to support a possible government led by Mario Monti: "Your choices are instrumental to your visibility. I've now understood what kind of politician you are, devoid of ideals and an opportunist. Half Bossi, half Mastella," Sergio Morabito harshly stated. "Questions of principle arise at a time when pragmatism is needed to save the country. And Monti is the best option," commented Michele Bendinelli. But there are also those who aren't so subtle: "Di Pié, don't do anything stupid!" wrote Leo Haller. And someone threatened: "You'll end up with Berlusconi too." "What are you doing, you find yourself in opposition with the League, hoping, like them, to gain votes from this choice." Others couldn't contain their disappointment: "I'll never vote for Di Pietro again, neither me nor my family! Shameful Bertinotti-style tactics," Massimo Scanu posted.
«"It's better for a technical government now. If she supports this position, fine, otherwise—it was another threat—I won't be able to vote for her anymore." Emma succinctly: "Di Pietro, it's time to leave you.".
Hundreds of messages, in short, asking Di Pietro to reconsider.
Di Pietro had been clear on television: "In a democracy, you launch a program and present it to the voters: if you win, you go into government; if you fail, the vote goes back to the voters. Everything else is noble words for despicable behavior. We need a political government that knows how to balance the books, otherwise it's always the same citizens who pay the price, cuckolded and beaten.".
IDV leader Di Pietro also expressed his belief that any potential convergence between the PDL and PD in support of a Monti government would be doomed within a couple of months: "They'll realize they can't have two men in the same bedroom, and at that point the 'Vasto pact' will be relaunched. The Monti government is a clean slate, but we will never sit alongside Berlusconi and his aides. It would be absurd.".
As if that weren't enough, the joke about the "two males" sparked renewed outrage, this time from Arcigay and LGBTQ+ groups, who called on Di Pietro to apologize: "The statement," Arcigay explained, "casts a shadow over his profound thinking: the IDV president, in fact, compares an ugly and messy situation to the intimate, supportive, and emotional dimension that two people of the same sex have the right, like everyone else, to see recognized by the legislature." And Di Pietro's apology was swift: "My joke was absolutely unfortunate but involuntary. I plan to meet with Arcigay as soon as possible.".
