Bologna, May 14, 2015 – In a circular sent to all superintendencies, school principals, parent and student associations, and student councils, the Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to the actions to be taken in schools of all levels to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation. The document states: "In carrying out this valuable work every day, schools educate about combating homophobia and all other forms of discrimination. Only through education can we overcome the prejudices and stereotypes still present in our society. To this end, schools must provide the tools and methodologies and implement all necessary practices for prevention interventions.".
“We especially thank Undersecretary Davide Faraone for his political commitment, and Director General Giovanna Boda, who coordinates student services, integration, and participation, for drafting the circular. She also thanked Boda for reminding us that May 17th represents an opportunity for all schools to raise awareness about inequalities, thus highlighting best practices and the best educational programs aimed at addressing diversity. We expect—the associations conclude—that this important awareness will be matched by concrete political will, the kind needed to unlock the interventions of the school axis of the UNAR national strategy and to renew this commitment for years to come.
