WCF IN VERONA, ARCIGAY ALSO AT THE SIGNATURES DAY AGAINST SPONSORSHIP. PIAZZONI: "INSTITUTIONS BELONG TO EVERYONE; A GROUPS TO DENY RIGHTS IS UNCONCEIVABLE."“
Verona, March 28, 2019 – Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay, was also part of the delegation that this morning delivered over 143,000 signatures to the Province of Verona, calling for the withdrawal of institutional sponsorship from the World Congress of Families, scheduled to take place in the city from tomorrow to Sunday. The delegation, which also included Yuri Guaiana of Allout, the international network that promoted the petition, and Luigi Turri of Arci Verona, stopped at Juliet's tomb, an icon of the city, before reaching the provincial headquarters to pay homage to the women who, like her, die every day because they are denied self-determination. "We find it absurd that in a country like Italy, a founding member of the European Union, public institutions can recognize a conference where people's rights are questioned and whose guests espouse hate and discrimination. Some of the speakers, we recall, supported bills in their home countries that criminalized homosexuality, or the possibility of "curing" it as if it were a disease. Others attack women, violently denying them access to voluntary termination of pregnancy and severely limiting their social role and rights. These are not free opinions," Piazzoni continues, "that conference is building a retrograde and liberticidal political landscape that our country must firmly reject."
