Homophobia: Transphobia: Basic text approved at Montecitorio. ARCIGAY: "Now no downside negotiations."“

Bologna, July 14, 2020 – "With the approval of the unified basic text, presented by rapporteur Alessandro Zan to the Justice Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the process of the law against homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny formally begins," stated Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay. He continues: "Parliament and the Government now have the opportunity to take an important first step to combat discrimination and violence and ensure concrete support for victims. The text submitted is already the result of mediation and has left out several issues that will require legislative intervention in the coming years. However, the extension of incitement to violence and discrimination and the aggravating circumstance of crime based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity, along with the provision, albeit with funding that needs to be increased, of active support policies for victims of homophobia and transphobia through legal, psychological, social mediation, and housing, are important elements that can significantly contribute to starting to address the phenomenon of discrimination and violence against LGBTI people. Now it is the majority's responsibility to ensure the law has a swift and reliable approval process, sparing us the sabotage that has plagued all attempts over the last 25 years to equip our country with a serious and effective law against transphobia." Homophobia and transphobia. We ask politicians to spare us the usual barrage of amendments aimed at emptying the law of its substance. These amendments are unbearable, first and foremost because they are made at the expense of so many people who are waiting for answers on these issues from institutions, which until now have always looked the other way.", he concludes.
