SCHOOL, ARCIGAY ANNOUNCES THE CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION'S DOCUMENT: "A DANGEROUS ACT, IT CIRCUMVENTS ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS."“
Bologna, March 30, 2022 – “We are dismayed to read the news regarding the document from the Congregation for Catholic Education, a dangerous act that circumvents Italian law and threatens the balance of one of the most important institutions of our system: schools,” declared Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. He continues: "The document explicitly states that a teacher's sexual orientation in a Catholic school can be grounds for discipline, even dismissal. This is a clear violation of our country's anti-discrimination laws, as well as a serious matter, which contaminates schools with an anti-educational principle, institutionalizing homophobic and transphobic hatred. Many Catholic schools, including private schools, are generously funded by the state, in open violation of Article 33 of the Constitution. The document adds an unacceptable aggravating factor: politics must intervene to protect the universality of schools, the right to education, work, and self-determination. The state cannot and must not delegate the educational function to those who do not share the values and principles of the Republic. This latest attack is extremely serious and must be stopped immediately," concludes Piazzoni.
