“1770. Marianne, a talented painter, is hired to paint the wedding portrait of Héloise, a young woman who tries to resist her fate, even refusing to pose. Marianne must paint her in secret, and the two women begin to date. A passionate and unexpected love blossoms between them, one that, despite the winds of revolution, proves unforeseen and unacceptable. A glimpse into the past that also seems to speak of our own times.”
The film won the Prix du scenario and the Queer Palm at Cannes, the Cesar Award for Best Cinematography, and the EFA Award for Best Screenplay.
Celine Sciamma, a French director and screenwriter who is openly lesbian, won the Ottavio Mai Prize and the Audience Award at the Lovers Film Festival in Turin in 2011 for her second feature film, Tomboy.
