HEALTH, 259 PARENTS WRITE TO THE MINISTER: "CAREGGI IS WELCOMING AN IDEOLOGICAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE HOSPITAL THAT PUTS THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN AT RISK."“
The letter was sent by Arcigay and Agedo to the European institutions: "Actions in conflict with the EU's founding treaties: the right to health is being denied."“

Bologna, February 8, 2024 The ongoing action against Careggi Hospital in Florence is a "punitive action" that, for ideological reasons, puts the lives of young women and girls at risk, and which is taking a "very dangerous" turn day by day. 259 parents denounced this in a letter addressed to Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, Tuscany Regional President Eugenio Giani, and Tuscany Regional Health Councilor Simone Bezzini. "All of us families," they write, "have had to figure out on our own over the years what was happening to our children because Italy is notoriously lagging behind in the rights of transgender people, who are completely invisible and without rights. We have had to conduct research abroad and consult among ourselves to understand the best course of action. The state has never been present. Careggi Hospital, over the years, has specialized in transgender health thanks to the work of two of the world's most experienced people on the subject, Dr. Fisher and Dr. Ristori, who have always followed international recommendations with particular attention to scientific evidence." According to the signatories, the media and political trial against Careggi has created a "dangerous" climate, including threats to doctors and patients: "As families, we believe that all politicians must therefore assume moral responsibility for any consequences such an action, handled in this way, has on a minority who daily experience extreme danger due to the lack of protection," the parents write. The Italian associations Agedo and Arcigay deemed it necessary to forward the letter to various representatives of European institutions, both political and scientific, so that they are informed of the facts and can intervene to urge Italy to act with respect for individuals and their fundamental rights. Specifically, the letter was forwarded to MEPs Kim van Sparrentak and Marc Angel, co-presidents of the LGBT intergroup; Fabio Massimo Castaldo, vice-president of the same intergroup; Constantinos Manolopoulos, acting director of the Fundamental Rights Agency; Helena Dalli, EU Commissioner for Equality; Paolo Gentiloni, Italian EU Commissioner; Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health; the office of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen; Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament; Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe; and Gabriella Calleja, Political Adviser of the Council of Europe. The associations write: "The right to psychosocial, health, and social care provided by a center of excellence in the public service like Careggi Hospital is being jeopardized by anti-scientific positions, and the press is increasingly disseminating manipulated and false information. All of this is contrary to the principles of the Italian Constitution and inconsistent with the founding Treaties of the European Union, violating the dignity and health of people, in this case, transgender people. The resulting discrimination and limitations on access to health services are contrary to the European Union's general objectives regarding health and justice," Arcigay and Agedo denounce.

Attached is the letter from the 259 parents and that of the Arcigay and Agedo associations.
