RIGHTS: GREEK PARLIAMENT APPROVES EQUAL MARRIAGE: ARCIGAY: "LAW SUPPORTED BY CENTER-RIGHT PRIME MINISTER: A LESSON FOR GIORGIA MELONI AND THE ITALIAN CENTER-LEFT"“
Bologna, February 15, 2024 "We can only be happy for Greek gay and lesbian couples who can now marry in the same way as heterosexual couples. Unfortunately, this is a mirage for those living in Italy," Gabriele Piazzoni, secretary general of Arcigay, commented on the Greek Parliament's vote today, which approved by a large majority the law reforming family law and establishing equal marriage. The point remains the same: Italy lags behind all other European countries when it comes to civil rights. But that's not all: once again, we see countries governed by center-right majorities quickly launching and concluding parliamentary procedures inspired by a single principle: equality. It's called liberal thought, and in Italy it seems to have completely disappeared from the parliamentary paradigm, replaced by a right-wing movement dominated by neo-fascists, Catholic fundamentalists, and gunmen. But if the Greek parliamentary vote is a litmus test highlighting the disaster of the Italian right, the left is no better: beyond the final result, Greece also teaches us lessons on how to conduct parliamentary procedures on the rights of so-called minorities: quickly, without leaving the country to wallow for months in a violent and divisive debate, the only effect of which is to open negotiations on issues—rights—that should never be discussed. Today, Italian LGBTQ+ people are in the limbo of those compromises, suspended in the "Non-equality," with children's birth certificates being contested here and there. "In Italy, we're still in the same predicament we were left in several years ago," concludes Piazzoni.
