Paolo Poli: A queer icon of theater, irony, and love for Naples
Name this treasure chest of memories after Paul Poli represents a choice with a strong symbolic value. Actor, director and singer, Poli was one of the freest, most irreverent and innovative geniuses of twentieth-century Italian theatre. With his unmistakable irony he overturned the bourgeois conventions and taboos of an often bigoted Italy. Openly homosexual since the times when the coming out It was an act of pure revolution, Poli lived his queer identity with naturalness, grace and disenchantment, bringing a cultured and brilliant transformism to the stage.
His connection with Naples It was profound and visceral. Poli loved the city's cultural richness and its extraordinary theatrical tradition. In the Neapolitan public and the soul of Naples, he found an elective affinity, an ideal interlocutor capable of fully understanding his art, which expertly blended the high register of literature with a popular and irreverent soul.
The words of President Antonello Sannino
Commenting on this historic milestone is Antonello Sannino, President of Antinoo Arcigay Napoli, who underlines the connection between this result and the association's long journey in the area:
“"In recent years, we have achieved significant results in terms of citizen services and political growth, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Antinoo Arcigay Napoli, founded in 1984, is increasingly a political, social, and cultural reference point for our city and beyond. This recognition fills us with pride: many longtime activists of our association continue to donate and enrich our wonderful and valuable archive dedicated to Paolo Poli. Personally, I am very pleased with this latest recognition of our work in the community, a work that comes from afar and projects us into the future, precisely this year marking the thirtieth anniversary of the first Pride Parade in Naples, which was also the first in Southern Italy.".
