[:it]Italy/Human Rights: A document on the rights of LGBTI people was presented to the UN. Bologna, May 7, 2019 The 34th session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will be held in November 2019, during which the UN Human Rights Council will examine the state of human rights in Italy. A coalition of LGBTI organizations—including Arcigay, the Associazione Radicale Certi Diritti, the Centro Risorse LGBTI, Gaycs (OutSport), and OII-Italia—have presented a document (in English) analyzing the human rights of LGBTI people, also taking into account the recommendations made to Italy in previous cycles of the Universal Periodic Review in 2009 and 2014. The organizations also propose a series of questions and recommendations to the various delegations that will review the Italian government's document. The questions focus on the human rights of intersex people and the right to seek asylum in Italy. The recommendations – 41 of which have been formulated – concern the right to life, safety and protection from violence and discrimination, freedom of expression and association, the right to marry and start a family, young people and school, health, the human rights of trans and intersex people, sport, the right to seek asylum in Italy, and the rights of LGBTI prisoners. Yuri Guaiana, president of the Radical Association Certi Diritti and coordinator of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), along with Rosario Coco, coordinator of the OutSport project, Alessandro Comeni, president of OII-Italia, Leonardo Monaco, secretary of the Radical Association Certi Diritti, Gabriele Pazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay, and Valeria Roberti, president of the LGBTI Resource Center, stated: "The UPR represents a very important opportunity for Italian LGBTI associations to influence Italian human rights practices and participate in a process of evaluating the state of human rights in our country. As we did in 2014—when we successfully persuaded Italy to approve same-sex marriage—now that we have submitted our document, we will work with our European partners to influence the governments that will evaluate Italy in November. If we succeed in getting Italy to implement our recommendations and if Italy accepts them, in the next five years we will have greater hope of seeing the human rights of LGBTI people more respected, even in the context of the current situation." in our country“.
