Dear Director, in reference to the letter entitled “The New Untouchable Homosexuals” published by your newspaper on August 24, 2011, I take the liberty of expressing my total disagreement with what Mr. Trevisani expressed.
First, the dogma that homosexuality must be an unnatural behavior has been refuted by science. In this regard, I would like to draw attention to a significant exhibition entitled "Against Nature," held in 2007 at the Natural History Museum in Oslo. The exhibition made public a scientific study confirming the existence of homosexual relationships in well over 1,500 animal species. Furthermore, in many species, relationships between animals of the same genus play an important role in raising young or incubating eggs. However, no cases of homophobia have ever been verified in any animal species, confirming that this is indeed an unnatural attitude, a social superstructure, linked to education and the dominant cultural context.
Given the above, I don't understand how a kiss between people of the same sex could be considered reprehensible and educationally unethical. A kiss is a demonstration of love and affection, regardless of whether it is exchanged by a heterosexual or homosexual couple.
Contrary to Mr. Trevisani's claims, I believe that children have all the tools to authentically interpret a gesture of love, if it is presented to them as such and not filtered by adults' embarrassment and inability to manage their own homophobia. The ability for children to grow up, from an early age, with the understanding that there are multiple ways to express their affection would, in my opinion, be a major achievement for our country and a decisive push toward a more inclusive society that fosters a culture of diversity.
Regarding other claims made by Mr. Trevisani, I recall that on May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, defining it as a variant of human sexual behavior. Therefore, it is completely unacceptable to consider homosexuality an illness.
Regarding the topic of marriage, I believe the LGBT movement's position is a prime example of a demand for rights and duties, including the assumption of responsibility towards one's partner and children. In this regard, I would like to inform Mr. Trevisani of the existence of same-sex families, which, like any other family unit, "assume a stable social role in the education of their children and the growth of society." It's a shame, however, that they don't enjoy the same rights.
Finally, regarding the call for an anti-homophobia law, I would like to quote some authoritative statements by the President of the Republic, released on May 17th. "Homophobia is a sentiment that must be fought, eradicated and defeated once and for all. At a cultural level, but also at a legislative level. And above all, it is a sentiment that should not be flaunted." And again, "We must not underestimate the risks that the habit of using irreverent allusions in public discourse, which are detrimental to human dignity, contributes to nourishing the soil in which homophobia takes root. The public display of derisive attitudes towards homosexuals is unacceptable in democratically adult societies.".
All this in the name of authentic freedom, acceptance of others, and a secular and inclusive society.

There are many faces of affection
