A Silent Emergency: Alarming Data from Campania

HIV remains a pressing public health problem, and the Campania It is among the four Italian regions with the highest number of cases.

  • In 2023, the region recorded 228 new diagnoses of HIV infection, positioning itself at the fourth place in Italy (after Lombardy, Lazio and Emilia-Romagna).

  • The regional incidence is higher than the national average, with an average of 4.0 cases per 100,000 residents.

  • At the national level, approximately 10% of HIV positive people are not aware of being HIV positive, contributing to the silent spread of the virus among the approximately 120,000 people living with the disease.

The data, released by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, also highlights a phenomenon of "export" of patients who turn to other regions to access healthcare services, a sign of the need to strengthen the local health organization.
