A political and social manifesto for the rights of LGBTQ+ people
“"A political, social, and cultural manifesto," is how Massimo Saveriano, creative director of Candelora 2024, described the program, which aims to highlight the issues still faced by gay and transgender people today. For the first time, breast cancer prevention will also be addressed, with breast screenings. "We'll offer thought-provoking shows and interesting discussions at this Candelora dedicated to Marcello Colasurdo. There'll also be some wholesome entertainment with the greatest Italian drag queens, Karma B, who will be joining us, in addition to the usual presence of Vladimir Luxuria.".
An ancient festival, the Feast of Light, which, according to the parish priest of Mercogliano, Don Vitaliano Della Sala, must be brought into the present, into the world we live in today. "This year's program is a beautiful way to highlight and re-celebrate tradition, including through gestures and meetings that address current issues. The ancient name for Candlemas is Hypapante, meaning "encounter." In Irpinia, this festival has for centuries been a celebration of the encounter between diversity, and fortunately, this encounter never becomes a clash, but rather an event that respects everyone.".
Expectations range from 5,000 to 7,000 people. "A major tourist attraction for Partenio," said Mercogliano Mayor Vittorio D'Alessio. "This year, we wanted to dedicate the entire POC to the month of February, which we consider our Ferragosto (August 15th), because it's all about the tradition and folklore that define our area in February, from Candlemas to Carnival, to the feast of our patron saints. This year, for Candlemas, we expect the same attendance as pre-Covid.".
An event that is simultaneously cultural, social, and religious, but also sustainable is what the president of the Partenio Regional Park, Francesco Iovino, hopes for. "The Partenio is a benchmark for the defense of human rights, and we are fighting for 'Candelora del Partenio' certification to promote these events. We continue to fight for the preservation of a territory's tangible and intangible assets, for people's right to live in a healthy environment.".
Art also takes center stage with Pesce's "The Last Crusade. Forgiveness": "Saints, martyrs, and gays. We are all superheroes."’
Art and urban regeneration will also be given space at Candlemas 2024, with the exhibition by Neapolitan master Piergiuseppe Pesce, "The Last Crusade. Forgiveness," which will be held in the Church of the Annunziata Vecchia, reopened for the occasion. "The church has always promoted culture," emphasized Don Vitaliano, promoter of the neo-pop exhibition. "The Sistine Chapel was Michelangelo's masterpiece, but there were some in the Vatican who criticized it, and a few decades later the fresco was given the famous "braghettoni." I've already heard some controversy surrounding the exhibition opening on January 29th, but I think art shouldn't be censored. Pesce's works bring together many contemporary elements, reinterpreted in a way that may or may not be appreciated. For a few weeks now, accusations of blasphemy have been haunting me; I've looked up the meaning of the term in the dictionary, and it has nothing to do with it.".
Saints and superheroes meet: "We need to be superheroes now more than ever, gays, martyrs, and saints, all together," said Saveriano, who also spoke about the censorship of a show that tells the story of the loneliness of some young people who lock themselves away at home and stay there for years. "We'll bring it with Don Vitaliano to the 99 Posti theater, an intense show, not for adults, that I really wanted to see. I'll also bring stories of transsexuals in Poggiorelale prison who need help. For me, this is Candlemas: it's social, it's cultural.".
