Gay Help Line: 21,000 contacts, 48.7% suffers domestic violence, increasing violence in public and at school for LGBT+ people

Violence after coming out in the family remains the most widespread, reported in 48.7% of cases. It mainly affects young people and adolescents, often forced into isolation and escape. Also on the rise are episodes of threats and harassment (28.2%)physical assaults (12%) . The homophobic robberies stand at 3.4%, with a strong impact on transgender women.

Complaints remain rare: Only 12.81% of victims turned to the police, a sign of persistent distrust in the system, given the lack of specific laws, but also due to the fact that many victims are not declared as LGBT+ in their families or at work.

The impact on mental health is also growing: the 30.3% of the people followed reported symptoms of anxiety, isolation and despair, and the 10.8% stated that he had undergone “conversion therapy”, , that is, unscientific therapies practiced by religious groups for convert people to not being LGBT+, often through violent actions.

On a social level, 34.5% has experienced situations of housing emergency, because they were separated from their family or marginalised because they were LGBT+, 10.8% requested support in their job search, in a context still marked by systemic discrimination (31.4% of cases, with peaks of 41.1% for trans and non-binary people).

On the school front, the cases of bullying homophobic and transphobic feelings rose to 8.5% (+2.5%), with a tendency towards self-censorship on the part of victims and an increase in social isolation and suicidal thoughts among LGBT+ adolescents.

Gay Help Line has activated personalized paths, providing legal support (32.8%), psychological support (68.4%), health support (12.6% for access to hormone therapy) and reception support (34.5%).
