March 31st marks International Transgender Visibility Day, celebrated worldwide. This is a precious opportunity in Italy to assert the rights denied to our community and the need to promote a new law for gender self-determination, replacing the obsolete Law 164/82.
We want an advanced law that recognizes our lives beyond lengthy and costly court proceedings. We want freedom from diagnoses and pathologization. We demand the depsychiatrization of our transgender experience, the recognition of our homotransparental families, and the gender affirmation of people with gender variance in developmental age. We have the right to exist and be fully recognized in the world of sports, to access the world of work and healthcare services, with gender-sensitive medicine capable of considering the plurality of our bodies beyond the binary of just two genders.
In Italy, being a trans person is not easy. We have always made ourselves visible together, with pride, to carry on our struggles.
On #TransDayOfVisibility, we remember that visibility is our greatest revolution and that every identity deserves respect and full citizenship. Now more than ever, #don'thide, let's make our voices heard together!
