On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., a commemoration of homosexual victims persecuted by Nazi-fascism will take place at the pink triangle glass plaque in the Estensi Gardens in Varese. Speakers will include Giovanni Boschini, President of Arcigay Varese; Davide Galimberti, Mayor of Varese; Rossella Dimaggio, Councilor for Equal Opportunities for the Municipality of Varese; and representatives of the Provincial ANPI and AGEDO Varese.
The commemoration will take place at the pink triangle plaque, which was destroyed in 2020 and later rebuilt.
In addition to Jews, Roma, Sinti, and political dissidents, approximately 100,000 men were imprisoned and killed in Nazi concentration camps simply because of their sexual orientation. They were branded with the pink triangle and subjected to torture, forced labor, and medical experiments. During the Fascist regime in Italy, homosexuality was also considered a crime, and persecution was commonplace. The ceremony will include short speeches reaffirming the importance of remembering these long-forgotten victims. A moment of silence and the laying of flowers will follow. All citizens are invited to attend, so as to never fade the memory of what happened.
