“"Woman, Life, Freedom": A Human Chain in Martyrs' Square for the Iranian People

NAPLES – MARTYRS' SQUARE
NAPLES - Sunday January 18th, at hours 11:00, the city of Naples will respond to the cry for freedom rising from Iran. A human chain will tighten in Martyrs' Square to show solidarity with the women and the Iranian people who for weeks have been defying, at the risk of their lives, the violent theocracy of the Ayatollahs' regime.
In the square against hatred and violence
Iran is currently experiencing brutal repression. The regime is attempting to bloodily crush a revolution led by women, the first to rebel against decades of oppression. In addition to summary executions and street violence, the government has imposed a almost total blackout of communications and social media, isolating the country to prevent images of the massacres from spreading around the world. A wall of silence we want to break down with our presence and our voice.
The symbolic value of Martyrs' Square
The choice of location is not accidental: Piazza dei Martiri represents the beating heart of Naples' libertarian memory. It is here that the fallen of the 1799 Revolution are honored, when the city experienced the epic of Parthenopean Republic, challenging the Bourbon monarchy in the name of universal rights. Despite the ferocious reactionary repression that crushed that democratic experiment, an indomitable spirit of resistance remained in the DNA of Neapolitans; the same spirit that would later drive the city to be the first to free itself from Nazi-Fascist occupation during the Four Days of 1943.
Today, that same thirst for freedom unites Naples and Tehran. Just as the martyrs of 1799 gave their lives for an ideal of justice, so today Iranian women and youth fight for a free, secular, and democratic Iran.
The appeal to citizenship
We invite all citizens, associations, political parties, unions, and institutions to join this human chain. It is not just an act of solidarity, but a moral duty: we cannot stand by and watch an entire people being martyred for demanding the right to exist.
“Naples does not forget its history and does not turn its back on those who today fight the same battle against tyranny.”
