On March 22nd, a big celebration is being held, sponsored by the Transsexual Association of Naples and Arcigay Antinoo, to celebrate a life dedicated to the fight for rights and dignity.
Naples is preparing to celebrate a true piece of its history and the LGBTQIA+ community. The next March 22, the city will blow out 90 candles together with the Tarantina, an iconic figure and considered the last historical Neapolitan “femminello”.
The event, strongly desired and organized by the’Transsexual Association of Naples (ATN) in collaboration with Arcigay Antinoo Naples, goes far beyond a simple birthday celebration. It is a fitting and heartfelt tribute to an extraordinary life, spent on the front lines demanding rights and dignity.
Since the difficult post-World War II years, Taranto has experienced firsthand the burden and courage of self-determination, at a time when even the words and definitions to describe transgender identity were lacking. Hers was a life in which the private sphere constantly and inevitably merged with the public, transforming her into a living symbol of resistance.
As the promoting associations emphasize, the battles fought by the Tarantina over the decades, consisting of demands, demonstrations, and pride, paved the way for those who came after. If today's younger generations enjoy greater rights and greater social awareness, it is also thanks to the struggles and perseverance of pioneers like her, who never stopped fighting for the right to exist in the light of day.
The event to gather in a big collective embrace and thank the Tarantina is scheduled for the evening of March 22nd. It will be a fabulous event, enriched by the presence of surprise guests ready to pay homage to this extraordinary protagonist of Neapolitan history.
