Ragusa and Coming Out. When coming out can be difficult but not impossible.

Ragusa, October 10, 2017 – Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 11, is Coming Out Day. On the occasion of International Coming Out Day, Arcigay Ragusa "Arcobaleno degli Iblei" is joining the national campaign #HoQualcosaDaDirvi, which arose from a long and participatory discussion among the youth of the Arcigay Giovani network. The campaign will consist of distributing postcards in various locations and sharing them on social media. The aim is to generate discussion about the act of coming out and to raise awareness of its importance, especially for those preparing to do so and for those who are about to hear it. The media often address this topic with ignorance and using incorrect terminology: the word "coming out" is often replaced by "outing." “Coming out” refers to a person’s conscious declaration regarding their own sexual orientation and gender identity, while ”outing” refers to a person’s act of declaring someone else’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity, overriding that person’s wishes.

HISTORICAL NOTES – Established in 1988, the day falls on this day, the first anniversary of the second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, held on October 11th.

«Coming out in the province of Ragusa is still complex. We were already present last Sunday in Ragusa,» says Arcigay Ragusa president Marco Igor Garofalo. “We have already distributed campaign postcards in Modica on Monday, October 9th, and we will be present tomorrow, October 11th, in Scicli, and on Friday, October 13th, in Vittoria. Because today, like yesterday, and like tomorrow, being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual (MtF or FtM), Intersexual, or Queer is not a disgrace, but it is NATURE! We reiterate on this occasion,” continues the Arcigay leader, “that there is no Gender Theory and that no one wants to educate boys and girls about homosexuality in schools, but rather about education and respect for everyone. To the boys and girls who still hide today,” Marco Garofalo suggests and concludes, “each in their own time and on their own path, to come out and make themselves visible. You will improve the quality of your life and that of other people."[:]
