It was a day of extraordinary human warmth and sisterhood that we experienced yesterday in Naples on the occasion of the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR). Despite the pouring rain, the city responded with massive and heartfelt participation, uniting in memory of the victims of homophobic and transphobic outrage.
The evening event was held in Scampia, where the took place first historic torchlight procession dedicated to TDoR in the neighborhood. The event was marked by moments of deep emotional participation, culminating in the reading of the names of trans people killed in Italy and around the world, a collective ritual to never forget the lives shattered by hatred. The event was framed by the beautiful photography exhibition “Queer” of Savior, strongly desired by the association Discovery Queer. Numerous interventions followed: not only from the organizing associations, but also from representatives of the Municipality and many ordinary citizens who wanted to share their testimonies.
The day of commemoration had already begun in the morning, with a moment of very strong emotional impact at the Secondigliano Prison. A delegation of associations Antinoo Arcigay Naples And Vesuvius Pride He met with the inmates for a double exchange of views: first with the trans women of the “Sirene” pavilion, and then with the trans youth and women of the prison.
In this difficult context, the importance of our volunteer projects has emerged strongly. “Beyond the Wall” And “Over the Rainbow”, the solidarity help desks that LGBTQ prisoners have relied on for years. Volunteers have collected numerous requests and testimonies, confirming the associations' support and attempting to provide concrete responses starting in the coming days.
The TDoR events were made possible thanks to the synergy between the associations Antinoo Arcigay Napoli, Vesuvio Pride, Pochos, Discovery Queer, Dream Team Women in the Network And Arci Scampia, with the precious Moral patronage of the Municipality of Naples.
