350 Trans* People Killed Worldwide in 2024. ARCIGAY: "A Spike in Violence Corresponds to the Spread of a Transphobic Agenda, Even in Italy."“
Today we celebrate TDoR, Transgender Day of Remembrance: commemorative events are planned in 49 Italian squares.
Bologna, November 20, 2024 – “Violence against trans people is still growing at alarming levels, while anti-rights crusades are spreading in Italy and around the world and transphobic agendas are gaining traction.” On the occasion of Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on November 20th (the international day on which we commemorate the memory of trans people killed by transphobic violence), Arcigay is raising the alarm about transphobia in Italy and around the world. “According to TGeu monitoring data,” says Christian Cristalli, head of Arcigay’s Trans Network, I am 350 trans people killed worldwide in 2024, the highest figure since the international organization began its constant monitoring in 2008. Of these acts of violence, the 94% are femicides of trans women and people socialized as women, the 93% migrant people and racialized, and the 46% I'm a sex worker. This violence is the result of a culture of hatred and prejudice that affects every aspect of trans and non-binary people's lives, imposing barriers to access to employment, healthcare, education, and welfare. Transphobia takes diverse and insidious forms: it manifests itself through reparative therapies still widespread in many countries, the continued pathologization and psychiatrization of trans experiences, hostile policies that deny social recognition of trans people's identity and the principle of gender self-determination, and the use of hate speech that permeates public and media debate. In Italy, these hate speeches and propaganda against trans people have reached very worrying levels of attack, not least the attempt to brandish "gender theory" in a parliamentary resolution to effectively invalidate the experiences of trans people and to legitimize the attack on gender variance in childhood and transgender adolescence.
Today, on the occasion of the TDoR, 49 Italian squares will host demonstrations, events, and marches to commemorate the victims. The full list is available on the website. italiatransagenda.it.
