We're surprised to read that Debora Serracchiani cites the Prodi government's DICOs as an example of the Democratic Party's commitment to same-sex couples. Are we being kidded?
Pointing to DICO as a positive example in favor of same-sex couples clearly demonstrates the cynicism and superficiality of a proposal made at the expense of people's skin and lives.
Leaving aside the offensive inconsistency of that bill, I would like to remind the Hon. Serracchiani that she, elected to the European Parliament as a champion of same-sex civil marriage, cannot now rely on the DICO to evidently get elected to the national Parliament, because this casts a definite shadow over her entire political credibility, which we are subjecting not only to gay, lesbian, and transgender people, but to the entire public opinion of this country. Enough of mocking people with humiliating procrastination!
Let's stop talking about blackmail when Enrico Pizza, Democratic Party councilor for the City of Udine, threatens to leave a party that isn't finally clear on the rights of same-sex couples. Certain positions, dear Honorable Serracchiani, are called dignity, not blackmail. Perhaps they could find other examples and more courage.
The dignity of people should be a concern for anyone holding political or institutional office.
I reiterate: the Democratic Party must say today, once and for all, whether it is a party to the right of the European right and whether it does not consider the issue of the rights of individuals and same-sex couples to be fundamental to its project of renewing and fulfilling democracy in our country.
Tell the voters once and for all. The Hon. Serracchiani, in turn, should tell us today, once and for all, whether the Italy he proposes to us is within the cultural boundaries of the Union or outside. Who is he looking to, Hon.? To Cameron and Blair, or to a backward Catholic communism?
