DRAGHI CONSULTATIONS, ARCIGAY: "BEING PRO-EUROPEAN MEANS PROMOTING RIGHTS"“
Bologna, February 9, 2021 – “In these days of great apprehension, as we wait for the government to regain stability, we are concerned about the vetoes that some political forces are using against Prime Minister-designate Mario Draghi to negotiate support in parliament,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, secretary general of Arcigay. He continues: "We are particularly surprised by those, like the UDC, who announce their intention to support a pro-European government by calling for a halt to the parliamentary process of the law against homotransphobia, already approved by the Chamber of Deputies, a measure long established and now consolidated in most of the countries that constitute the European Union. Furthermore, we are astonished by the shameless way in which those invested with legislative power in our Republic bargain that power with the executive, tearing up the separation of powers and their mutual autonomy, which is the founding axis of our constitutional structure. Our hope, on the contrary, is firmly anchored in our Constitution: we expect Parliament, even in the context of a large majority supporting a technical government, to reclaim the autonomy of the legislative branch and continue the process of approving measures that our social fabric sorely needs, starting with the law against homotransphobia. We address this appeal in particular to the forces that supported the old majority (Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, Leu, and Italia Viva) and that they can still muster the numbers to reach the goal of final approval. But not only that: on the subject of Europeanism, especially today when Europeanism seems to have become the banner of many if not all, we want to remember that Europe is a Europe of equality, of rights, a Europe that includes differences and supports the self-determination of citizens. Ursula von der Leyen herself has made this clear in no uncertain terms: there is no room for discrimination against LGBTI+ people in the European Union. Therefore: there is no Europeanism that can veto laws that promote human, civil, and social rights. In this regard, we want to bring to the attention of the Prime Minister-designate the fact that gay and lesbian couples with children in Italy still experience a serious state of invisibility, which is being affected by the crisis we are experiencing and which will presumably worsen in the months to come. Those sons and daughters are citizens. of Europe and cannot live in a world of half-baked rights due to the opposition of those who call themselves pro-Europeans but in reality have chosen Poland and Hungary as models of Europe, countries that are going through a dark era of freedom-killing, which affects women and LGBTI people. Italy cannot and must not follow that example: on this point, we are ready to return to the streets immediately,“ concludes Piazzoni.
