[:it]“"Arcigay Defamed": Gandolfini convicted. He was fined €30,000 and ordered to pay €10,000 in damages to the association and its then-president.
Piazzoni: "The Family Day patron has been exposed. Justice has been served."“
Bologna, June 10, 2019 – This morning, the Verona Court, sitting as a single judge, convicted Massimo Gandolfini, spokesperson for the "Let's Defend Our Children" Committee and organizer of Family Day, of defaming Arcigay. The judge sentenced Gandolfini, pursuant to Article 595 of the Criminal Code, paragraphs 1 and 2, to four months' imprisonment, converted into a fine of €30,000, and ordered the association to pay a provisional sum of €7,000 and its then-president, Flavio Romani, €3,000, plus court costs and damages. The events to which the ruling relates occurred in 2015, when, during a public speech, Gandolfini claimed that pedophilia was among the 58 gender identities approved by Arcigay, which could be chosen from among those available on Facebook to characterize one's profile. To support his claims, Gandolfini showed an article from La Repubblica, whose headline read, "From today, social media allows you to choose between 58 different identities. All approved by Arcigay, including one destined to spark debate." However, he completely misrepresented the content, claiming that the gender identity approved by Arcigay and destined to spark debate was pedophilia, and not that of "femminiello," as the article correctly stated. "Once again, a figure from the ultraconservative world is condemned for his conduct toward LGBTI individuals and associations," commented Gabriele Piazzoni, Arcigay general secretary. "A few months ago, Pillon was convicted in Perugia, and today Gandolfini has done the same in Verona. This conviction tells us a lot about the method the Family Day patrons use to assert their ideas: defamation. Today, we are very pleased to say once again that justice has been done and that we will continue to defend the dignity and honor of LGBTI people in every court. Our heartfelt thanks go to lawyer Rita Nanetti, who assisted us with great expertise in this matter," concludes Piazzoni. *"Defamed Arcigay": Gandolfini convicted.
