EUROPEAN ELECTIONS: 142 CANDIDATES HAVE SIGNED TO THE PLATFORM FOR LGBTQI+ RIGHTS. ITALY LEADS IN EUROPE IN NUMBER OF SIGNATURES.
Bologna, June 6, 2024 Ilga Europe's ComeOut4EU platform has seen a surge in support in Italy: a total of 142 candidates for the upcoming European elections have signed the appeal presented by the federation of European LGBTQI+ associations. The appeal calls on future MEPs to commit to supporting the rights of LGBTQI+ people, supporting policies that protect them, such as anti-hate speech laws, as well as affirming their rights, such as those of parental families and the recognition of their children. In Italy, 142 people running in these elections have signed these pledges (Italy is the country with the most signatures so far): 54 are from the Five Star Movement, 34 from the Democratic Party, 22 from the Alliance of the Greens and the Left, 17 from Action/We Are Europeans, 10 from the United States of Europe, and 5 from Peace, Land and Dignity. The constituency with the most "rainbow" candidates is the North West (43 members), followed by the Centre (31), then the North East (29), the South (29) and the Islands (16). The data is collected and can be consulted on the website votoarcobaleno.it. "As with every election," explains Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay, "we've developed an online tool to guide people in choosing the candidates who support our demands. But be careful, because the most dangerous enemy, today as in the past, is abstentionism. Giorgia Meloni became prime minister in Italy certainly thanks to many votes, but above all thanks to all the people who, by not voting, made those votes sufficient to achieve a relative majority. Abstentionism, let's remember, favors the worst. That's why Arcigay is committed to encouraging the LGBTQI+ community to vote en masse. We've also launched a challenge: bring eight people to vote with you on June 8th. We hope this word-of-mouth campaign will engage many people," concludes Piazzoni.
