Bologna, October 16, 2024 – “The Varchi bill, now state law, represents "A grave denial of individual freedoms and self-determination," says Michela Calabrò, head of Arcigay's Transfeminist Women's Network. "Introducing a crime, even a universal one, on the topic of surrogacy," she continues, "not only limits the possibility of choice, but also fuels a patriarchal view of women's bodies. Every woman should have the right to decide how, when, and whether to continue a pregnancy, and surrogacy can be a conscious and altruistic choice. This measure highlights the government and parliament's inability to address other important and urgent issues in our country. The parliamentary majority, in fact, once again chooses to demonstrate its strength primarily on ideological grounds, while confirming its total incompetence on pragmatic issues. In this context, ideology becomes not only a rhetorical weapon, but also a way to mask the catastrophic horizon that awaits us," concludes Calabrò.
