HOMOTRANSPHOBIA LAW, ARCIGAY: "NO TO THE ERRORS OF THE PAST, WE MUST FIND A RIGHT MEDIATION"“
Bologna, July 23, 2020 "The amendment currently circulating as a compromise between various political forces to ensure broad approval of the anti-homophobia law risks repeating the same errors that, years ago, led to the failure of the Scalfarotto bill," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Arcigay general secretary. "We cannot afford to find ourselves in the paradox of writing words in a bill against discrimination that could somehow be interpreted as safe conduct for borderline or even discriminatory conduct. The issue of freedom of speech and opinion simply doesn't exist: the rules that the Zan bill integrates have been in place for decades and have not only never muzzled legitimate opinions, but have failed to even muzzle the most blatant racists, as the small number of court rulings demonstrates. That same law cannot now become a tribunal of the Inquisition just because the words "sex," "sexual orientation," and "gender identity" are added." This fear is not only unfounded but completely unrealistic, promoted by those who simply don't want this law. In an attempt to reassure these parliamentarians, an entire community has been plunged into dismay and disappointment. The hope is that the political forces will get back to work finding common ground that doesn't distort the meaning of this battle and that is up to the challenge this law represents, at this time and in this country,” concludes Piazzoni.
