L'Aquila, September 2, 2024 – On Sunday, September 1, 2024, the annual commemoration of Arcigay "Massimo Consoli" L'Aquila and Arcigay Nazionale was held at the burial place of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs in the Monumental Cemetery of L'Aquila, in memory of a person who was one of the fundamental pillars of the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement.
Ulrichs, born in Aurich, Germany on August 28, 1825, published pamphlets and books on homosexuality, laying the foundation for the work of the following decades. On August 27, 1867, he made the first ever public appearance at the Sixth Congress of German Jurists in Munich, calling for the abolition of laws against homosexuality. After leaving Germany, he chose exile in Italy and died in L'Aquila on July 14, 1895.
During the commemoration, Patrizia Passi, president of Arcigay L'Aquila, and Claudio Tosi, head of culture for Arcigay nationally, announced that the National Council of Arcigay, the assembly of all 74 Arcigay organizations in Italy, has awarded L'Aquila the title of Arcigay Capital of Culture 2025, in recognition of the fact that 2025 will mark the bicentenary of Ulrichs's birth.
«"The time has come to give Ulrichs the recognition he deserves, reclaiming his story and the power of his thought, so that they can once again be useful to today's society." This is the joint statement from President Passi and Director Tosi. For this reason, in 2025, Arcigay Nazionale, together with its local branch, will make L'Aquila the hub for a reflection on the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement, through events in collaboration with various organizations in the city, the Abruzzo region, Italy, and Europe.
Furthermore, the L'Aquila City Council approved the motion presented by Councilor Lorenzo Rotellini requesting the redevelopment of Ulrichs's tomb in the Monumental Cemetery. On the morning of Wednesday, August 29, municipal workers installed a commemorative plaque and cleaned the site.
