Homophobia: A gay minor is discriminated against at a school in Monza. Arcigay calls for "the Ministry to intervene immediately."“

Bologna, September 21, 2016 – “We read with extreme alarm about the story of the boy from Monza whose mother reported his exclusion from school because he was gay,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, national secretary of Arcigay. "The matter deserves the immediate attention of the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), which is required to promptly clarify the situation and intervene if it is determined that the rights of that boy and all the others attending the school have been violated. Furthermore, we hope that, should further investigations confirm the mother's complaint, the Ministry will take exemplary action, because a right like education, a fundamental right in our Constitution, cannot be delegated to individuals who clearly do not share our Constitution's values. On this issue, which unfortunately goes well beyond the current situation, it would be appropriate to urgently initiate an in-depth political discussion. Finally, we appeal to all stakeholders in the Lombardy school case to exercise the necessary caution in carrying out every function, including information provision, and to ensure maximum protection for the minors involved. Let us put the interests of that child and all his classmates at the center," concludes Piazzoni.
