[:it]HOMOPHOBIA, RECURRENCES IN CHECHNYA AND ALGERIA. ARCIGAY: "ITALIAN GOVERNMENT AND EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT MUST BREAK THE SILENCE"“
Bologna, February 14, 2019 – "The serious news of homophobic and transphobic violence that has reached us in recent weeks from Chechnya and Algeria cannot go unnoticed in our country, and even more so in the European Union," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Arcigay general secretary. He continued: "In recent days, a 21-year-old student's throat was slit. in his apartment in Algiers, and his blood was used to brand the walls of that room with the slogan "gay." A few days earlier, Algerian Prime Minister Ouyahia had given an interview in which he categorically rejected attempts to change the country's law, which currently criminalizes homosexuality. Similarly, in recent days, the violent wave of repression against LGBTI people in Chechnya has intensified: according to news reports, since the beginning of the year, over 40 people have been arrested and tortured in that country for being considered homosexual. "We cannot remain indifferent to these events," Piazzoni protests. "Indeed, an official statement and diplomatic action to counter these phenomena are at the very least necessary. To date, only activists from international networks are mobilized, in total solitude. Politics remains silent, and this is unacceptable," he concludes.[:]
