Patrick Zaki Arrested in Egypt, Arcigay: "The Situation Is Unacceptable. We Join Those Calling for His Immediate Release."“
Bologna, February 10, 2019 – “For days, we have been following with great concern the case of Patrick Zaki, an Egyptian activist and student at the University of Bologna, who was arrested upon his arrival in Cairo last Friday,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. He continued: “While the call for truth and justice regarding Giulio Regeni's murder remains unheard, the Egyptian authorities are persisting in the use of serious and unacceptable institutional violence. According to reports, Patrick Zaki has already been tortured with electric shocks, and it is legitimate to believe that his life is in danger in Egyptian detention centers. We join the chorus of those currently calling for the government to pay maximum attention to this matter and for the activist's immediate release. We also expect the Italian government to seriously consider Egypt's current safe country status, placing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms ahead of any economic interests,” Piazzoni concluded.
