COUNCIL OF EUROPE REPORT, ARCIGAY TO MATTARELLA: "WE ARE NOT SURPRISED. WE HAVE ALWAYS DENOUNCED STATE VIOLENCE."“
Bologna, October 23, 2024 – "We are sorry for the Head of State, President Mattarella, who reacted with incomprehensible surprise to the criticisms raised by the Commission against Racism and Intolerance established by the Council of Europe. We, on the other hand, have always denounced those events, so today we are not surprised," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. In the context of the President's astonishment, we recall the beating of a trans* person in Milan last year by local police officers, to name just the most sensational case, which has been in the news for days and which outlines the contours of true state violence. Not only that: the Council of Europe, in the Commission's report, says many other important things: for example, it recommends that all compulsory school curricula at all levels of education include issues related to LGBTI equality. This is exactly the opposite of what the Sasso resolution, approved by the Parliament's Culture Committee, advocates. And again: on the subject of gender identity, the report recommends ensuring that the process of legal gender recognition is rapid, transparent, and accessible, and that it is not subject to unfair requirements, such as medical procedures and/or mental health diagnoses. Here too, it is clear that Italy is going in the opposite direction. Should we be surprised if Europe scolds us and calls us to fully recognize human and civil rights? No, we are not surprised; on the contrary, we get angry at the "Astonishment, because it betrays a desire to sweep mountains of toxic politics under the rug. But no, we must continue to discuss these uniquely Italian tendencies, also to recognize the work of those who operate within institutions and law enforcement with integrity and loyalty, and who today find themselves having to share the stigmatization of European institutions," concludes Piazzoni.
