The 48th session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will be held in November 2024, during which the UN Human Rights Council will examine the state of human rights in our country.
Rome, November 26, 2024 A coalition of LGBTI organizations—composed of Associazione Radicale Certi Diritti, IntersexEsiste, Famiglie Arcobaleno, and Arcigay—have developed a brief document analyzing the human rights of LGBTI people, also taking into account the recommendations made to Italy in previous cycles of the Universal Periodic Review in 2009, 2014, and 2019.
Yuri Guaiana, Secretary of the Radical Association Certi Diritti, has undertaken intense advocacy work at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, meeting with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Permanent Missions of numerous countries, including:
Americas: Mexico, Colombia, Canada, United States, Chile, and Brazil
Europe: United Kingdom, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Malta, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and EU.
The main objective is to highlight persistent violations of LGBTI human rights in Italy, starting with the introduction of the "universal crime" against surrogacy, and to raise a series of questions and recommendations for the Italian government. The questions focus on concerns related to the Education Committee's resolution calling on Parliament to ban the teaching of gender and sexual diversity in schools, the protection of LGBTI asylum seekers, the introduction of a ban on so-called "reparative therapies," and the human rights of transgender people. The recommendations concern the establishment and adequate funding of a functionally and financially independent human rights institution, equal marriage, automatic birth recognition for children born to LGBTI individuals, the extension of the right to adoption for singles and same-sex couples, non-discriminatory access to reproductive health services, and the ban on non-consensual and medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex children.
“"The Universal Periodic Review represents a crucial opportunity to influence Italy's human rights record," said Yuri Guaiana, Secretary of the Radical Association Certi Diritti, Gabriele Pazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay, Alessia Crocini, President of Famiglie Arcobaleno, and Manuela Falzone of IntersexEsiste. "We will continue to push for Italy to implement international recommendations and guarantee full protection for LGBTI people.".
