HEALTHCARE, FREE HORMONE THERAPY IN EMILIA-ROMAGNA. ARCIGAY: "A GOOD PRACTICE WE ASK OTHER REGIONS TO IMITATE"'
Bologna, September 30, 2020 – “This is good news, an act of good governance by a Region that is addressing the dysfunction of a system and standing with those who suffer from it.” This is how Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Arcigay, commented on the Emilia-Romagna regional council's resolution introducing free hormone therapy for transgender people. The dysfunction remains and must be resolved as quickly as possible—and better—at the national level. However, Emilia-Romagna can serve as a model for all other regions to emulate in the meantime. A year ago, the Legislative Assembly of Emilia-Romagna approved its regional law against homotransphobia, after a marathon 50-hour session in the chamber to counter right-wing obstructionism. Today, in that region, we are experiencing firsthand one of the concrete consequences of that battle. It wasn't, in short, an ideological battle; it was simply a fight for a more just world. And today, Emilia-Romagna has remedied a grave injustice,“ concludes Piazzoni.
