[:it]*SPORT, UNIVERSIADE IN NAPLES. ARCIGAY OFFERS A SCHOLARSHIP TO GRADUATES: €1,000 TO INVESTIGATE HOMOTRANSPHOBIA ON THE PLAYING FIELD.* *Bologna, July 3, 2019* – The XXX Universiade, the major international tournament dedicated to university students, opens today in Naples. On the occasion of this event, which will involve 8,000 athletes from 170 countries, Arcigay is promoting a scholarship for degree theses that address the following topics: Hate, Homophobia, and Transphobia in sport; Diversity Management and equality standards of sports clubs; Coming out in the Italian sports world. To access the scholarship, worth €1,000, you must send your application to [email protected], specifying, in addition to their personal details, the thesis title and the expected completion time. "We believe it is essential to introduce study and thesis topics in universities on issues that concern many people who live, work, engage in and love sports," comments Marco Arlati, member of the National Secretariat of Arcigay with responsibility for Sport. "In this sense," he continues, "we thank Agedo Marche for their collaboration, which has been working on projects on this topic for two years." Furthermore, for the Universiade, Arcigay has opened a new section on its website, integrating the map of Italian LGBTI+ sports organizations with those of the university world, to give visibility to all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender university students who participate in sports.www.arcigay.it/sports). "Sport," Arlati continues, "like family and school, is one of the social spaces where a person is trained and educated to respect and value diversity. Unfortunately, sport is also the place where it is currently difficult in Italy to come out and freely live one's sexual orientation or gender identity, regardless of the type of sport one practices. Homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of hatred, which take shape at sporting events or in sports venues, must be fought, and it is time for sports clubs to take a visible step forward on these issues. The sport that enters our homes every week is a tool for spreading positive and educational messages and must also be effective in the fight for civil rights. In this regard, I recall that on May 4, 2016, the 244th National Council of the Italian National Olympic Committee amended its statute to include among its commitments the fight against discrimination related to sexual orientation in sport. But after more than two years, none of the sports federations belonging to the CONI has incorporated that provision into its statute. We therefore reiterate our request to the various CONI federations to incorporate their commitment to combating discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in sport into their statutes,“ he concludes.
