In Turin, the Municipality has just approved a resolution to join the Honorary Committee of the 15th Conference of ILGA Europe (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association), which this year will take place in the Savoy city.
In a country like ours, ideologically paralyzed by prejudice in recognizing the civil rights of homosexual and transgender people, membership represents a sign of good governance, not because it is friendly but because it is fair and respectful of the many ways of being men and women and equal citizens.
The City of Turin confirms the role that municipalities, provinces, and regions can play in accelerating the reconnection of politics to the true diversity of Italian society, a role that politics and public administrations should represent with objective respect for all.
We now expect the Piedmont Region to retrace its steps and show its openness to the Europe to which Piedmont has historically been a privileged gateway, by joining the ILGA Conference with equally dutiful recognition of the lives and rights of all.
We are certain that in the end, the awareness will prevail that this membership, as well as the reattribution of regional patronage to the Turin LGBT Film Festival, would and will always do good for the image and culture of the entire country, of Piedmont, and of those who govern it.
