EU, ITALIAN QUESTION ON THE ARRESTS OF LGBTI ACTIVISTS IN POLAND. ARCIGAY: "THE MEANING OF THE EUROPEAN UNION IS FALKING. A VIGOROUS RESPONSE IS ESSENTIAL."“
Bologna, August 26, 2020 – “We welcome with relief the news of the question by Italian MEPs Benifei (S&D) and Castaldo (NI) regarding the arbitrary arrests of several LGBTI activists in Poland,” said Gabriele Piazzoni, secretary general of Arcigay. He continues: "Now, however, we await a clear and unequivocal response, explicitly condemning the Polish government's blatantly homophobic measures. Because homotransphobia in Poland has now become a government agenda with the re-election of President Duda and is increasingly manifesting itself through violations of the most basic principles of the rule of law. Europe must stand with those unjustly arrested in Poland and must do its part to protect the fundamental rights of all European citizens. Urgent measures are therefore needed, as are exemplary sanctions: the two MEPs were right to explicitly call for them. Otherwise, we would be faced with an unacceptable paradox in the very identity of the European Union. This is a serious matter, which would fuel the anti-Europeans' ambitions, the last thing Europe needs today," concludes Piazzoni.
