HUNGARY APPROVES ANTI-PRIDE LAW. PIAZZONI (ARCIGAY): "FASCIST ACTION, THE EU MUST DEFEND ITS FOUNDING VALUES."”

Bologna, April 15, 2025 – "The Hungarian Parliament's final approval of a law banning Pride parades and LGBTQIA+ demonstrations represents a grave attack on democracy, human rights, and human dignity. Arcigay expresses its full solidarity and support for the Hungarian LGBTQIA+ community, which in recent weeks has demonstrated extraordinary courage, opposing with all means an increasingly authoritarian and illiberal government," said Gabriele Piazzoni, Secretary General of Arcigay. He continues: "What passed in Budapest is not just a simple law, but yet another explicit expression of a fascist government, which uses repression and discrimination as tools of social control. Viktor Orbán and his government have dismantled Hungarian democracy, trampling on the rights of minorities and imposing a model of society based on hatred and exclusion. Therefore, the evident closeness between Orbán and many leaders of the Italian government, starting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Minister Matteo Salvini, is disturbing. It is time for the European Union and all member states to unambiguously defend their founding values, condemning what is happening in Hungary. For our part, we will not allow the voice of the Hungarian community to be silenced. We will carry their pride and resistance with us in the more than 50 marches of the 2025 Pride Wave: we will march for them too, because no government can ever erase our freedom to exist, love, and fight," he concludes. Piazzoni.
