Lesbian existence has always been defined by negation, but lesbians are not "failed males" or "women who haven't found the right man." They haven't given up on motherhood, and they're no less women for choosing not to be mothers. They aren't men's forbidden desire; their sexuality isn't pornography for their own use and consumption.
