Milk in Vimercate

Friday 17 April, at 9.00 pm, on the occasion of the Screening of Gus Van Sant's film Milk at the Cineforum Spazio Capitol in Vimercate (MI) is pleased to announce its participation in the evening of Aurelio Mancuso, National President of Arcigay and Fabio Pellegatta, Head of the Culture Sector of CIG Arcigay of Milan.

The film Milk (USA, 2008 – running time 128') won two Academy Awards® (Sean Penn – Best Actor; Dustin Lance Black – Best Original Screenplay), was nominated for six Academy Awards®, and won 30 other awards and 44 nominations. Directed by Academy Award®-nominated director Gus Van Sant, the film was shot in San Francisco, based on an original screenplay by Academy Award® winner Dustin Lance Black, and produced by Academy Award® winners Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen.

The film tells the story of Harvey Milk, who, in 1977, was elected supervisor (city councilor) in San Francisco, becoming the first openly gay man to hold a major public office in America. His victory was not only a victory for gay rights, but also paved the way for coalitions across the political spectrum. For many—from seniors to union members—Harvey Milk embodied a new figure in the civil rights movement; and with his tragic, premature death in 1978, he became a hero to countless Americans.

Gay rights activist. Friend. Lover. Unifier. Politician. Fighter. Icon. Hero. His life changed history, and his courage changed the lives of so many.

The Cineforum Spazio Capitol has decided to organize the meeting with Aurelio Mancuso, thanks to the help and collaboration of Fabio Pellegatta, to explore the issues linking politics and homosexuality, discrimination and outing, the fight for civil rights and homophobic barriers.

With his passion and determination, Milk was an example to many; speaking about him today helps us understand how much his example can teach us and how Italy can become a nation with equal rights for all.
