Bologna, May 13, 2013 – May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, a serious and widespread phenomenon in Italy, affecting even institutional roles and weighing on the lives of millions of gay, lesbian, and transgender people and their families. "In these confusing days," say the activists of Arcigay "Il Cassero" in Bologna, "when Italian politics is speaking through promises and contradictory vetoes, we urge Minister Iosefa Idem to seize the opportunity of this symbolic date to step up and clearly define a roadmap for the rights of gay, lesbian, and transgender people. European and non-European governments that have legislated on these issues in recent months have done so by defining content and deadlines, without betraying either. Minister Idem, then, should follow Hollande, Cameron, and Obama and—on the day when the victims of homophobia are remembered around the world—make your commitment: by summer 2013, the Mancino law will be extended to crimes based on discrimination based on sexual orientation. The fight against homophobia, in the words of the representatives of this unprecedented majority, seems to be gaining cross-party support, and in terms of numbers, it is very significant. So, Minister Idem break the ice and move from words to deeds, opening the approval process today.".
In Bologna, to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, a calendar of events has been prepared, coordinated by the Cassero and including many organizations active in LGBT issues (the Cassero LGBT Center, Komos – Bologna Gay Choir, SISM Italian Secretariat for Medical Students, ArciLesbica Bologna, Articolo29, Rete Lenford – LGBT Advocacy, Bugs Bologna). The presentation of the book "Adolescence and Violence. Homophobic Bullying as the Formation of Masculinity" by Giuseppe Burgio (Mimesis Edizioni, 2012) is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:00 PM at the Cassero (Via Don Minzoni, 18). Also noteworthy are three events on Friday, May 17: at 4:00 PM at the Archiginnasio in the Stabat Mater Hall (Piazza Galvani, 1) for the presentation of articolo29.it, the first portal that provides online access to all legal instruments relating to LGBT people; at 1pm and 4pm – at the Piazzola Market and the Margherita Gardens respectively – with colorful incursions by volunteers from the Cassero PeopAll group.
