PRESS RELEASE – SALERNO, HOMOPHOBIA AT RUGGI. CARMINE ALFANO, HEAD OF SURGERY, RECORDED BY SPECIALISTS USING HOMOPHOBIC AND VEXATORIC PHRASES.

[:en]We learn from the columns of the weekly magazine “L'Espresso” of disconcerting episodes involving medical students at the Ruggi hospital in Salerno.

«"Rich people are in fashion in America. Here, men and women exist; there are no tracks." And shortly after, he adds: "Everyone in there, in the crematorium in Cava di Tirreni, and we've solved the problem." This is one of the statements reported by L'Espresso, by the director of the School of Specialization in Plastic Surgery at the University of Salerno, located within the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d'Aragona hospital. These conversations are recorded by the young residents: tired of constant harassment, threats, and an atmosphere that is anything but professional.

This is just one of the horrific remarks that, as the weekly magazine reports, the same people have been recording for months, including insulting, offensive, and harassing remarks from the professor, whose name is reported by the same weekly as Carmine Alfano, Head of Surgery at the Salerno hospital and recent right-wing candidate in the Torre Annunziata local elections, who reached the runoff supported by Forza Italia, Fratelli d'Italia, and Italia Viva.

These statements were accompanied by harassing behavior reported in the recordings and which was reported by the specialist trainees' association, which then turned to the national newspaper.

“"We are shocked to learn that there are still people who engage in such heinous behavior," commented Francesco Napoli, Commissioner of Arcigay Salerno, "especially within the National Health Service and towards trainees. These homophobic remarks delegitimize the Hospital, where we have repeatedly reported cases of discrimination without any response or action, and the medical profession itself. If the incidents emerging from the recordings reported by the weekly were to be verified," Napoli continued, "we imagine that, for the sake of dignity, the Hospital and the Medical Association should intervene promptly. In addition to the homophobic and violent remarks, the behavior of the head physician, as reported, appears harassing and abusive, which leads us even more to believe that any responsibilities must be ascertained and measures taken to protect the psychological well-being of trainees. The bitter fact that emerges once again is the pervasiveness of homophobia." "It is a creeping, pervasive, and pervasive relationship, and silence continues to be an insurmountable wall," Napoli continues. "We need victims to start reporting it; only in this way," concludes the Arcigay Commissioner, "can the institutions be awakened from their torpor. We await the general management of Ruggi, we await the Mayor and the institutions. Let's see if someone, at least this time, will feel the need to take action.".
