An Arcigay delegation at the Budapest Pride Parade met with the Italian Ambassador today: "Our government's lack of a stand against Orbán's homophobic and transphobic policies is embarrassing."“

Tomorrow, the delegation will meet with the mayor of Budapest and then participate in the parade banned by the government. Three neo-Nazi demonstrations were authorized that afternoon.

June 27, 2025 – A delegation from Arcigay, composed of the general secretary Gabriele Piazzoni and from Christian Cristalli And Daniela Lourdes Falanga, of the national secretariat, met this morning with the Italian Ambassador in Budapest Manuel Jacoangeli. The meeting took place within the framework of the mission of the Italian delegation to Budapest Pride, The 2025 edition of the Pride Parade is taking place amid heightened tensions due to the repressive policies of the Orbán government, which banned the event. During the meeting, the Arcigay delegation, along with others, expressed deep concern over the Italian government's lack of a clear stance regarding the ban on LGBTQIA+ demonstrations in Hungary, unlike other European countries. They also emphasized the serious difficulties trans people face in Hungary, where exchanging documents is effectively prohibited, and the government's growing hostility toward the fundamental rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that, while the Pride Parade has been banned, Hungarian authorities authorized three demonstrations by neo-Nazi groups in the city on the same afternoon. The delegation received assurances from the Embassy of full diplomatic support should the need arise.

“Orbán's Hungary is increasingly becoming a country hostile to LGBTQIA+ people,” he says. Gabriele Piazzoni – , with laws that deny fundamental rights and an increasingly intimidating social climate. It is unacceptable that Pride is banned while neo-Nazi groups can demonstrate freely. We call on the Italian government and the European Union to take a stronger stance against these discriminatory policies. Our presence here is an act of international solidarity: we will not leave Hungarian LGBTQIA+ people alone.”

Tomorrow the delegation will meet the mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, then he will participate in the Budapest Pride within the Italian section.
